On Sept. 16, MTN Group started building its first artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Nigeria at a cost of $240 million.

The Johannesburg-based telecom company confirmed that the project will lay the groundwork for rolling out more AI-focused facilities across Africa.

The data centre will offer computing power to businesses, governments, and institutions looking to use AI solutions, while helping MTN grow into new revenue areas.

According to CEO Ralph Mupita, the project shows MTN’s dedication to making Africa a strong player in the global AI space.

He said the company is in talks with potential international partners from the US and Europe to expand the project and build similar centres in other MTN markets.

The facility in Nigeria is part of MTN’s bigger plan under its new unit, Genova, which aims to make money from infrastructure, open access to third parties, and boost innovation. With over 40 million subscribers in Nigeria, MTN views the market as a key spot for AI growth.

Africa makes up less than one percent of global AI data centre capacity, showing a big gap in infrastructure. By placing its first AI data centre in Nigeria, MTN wants to increase local computing power and cut dependence on foreign centres that raise costs and add delays.

Industry experts say the $240 million project is a clear sign of trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.

The investment is set to spur growth in cloud services, AI apps, and digital changes in areas like finance, health, and manufacturing.

Mupita added that MTN is planning ways to ensure steady electricity for the facility, given Nigeria’s ongoing power issues. Getting reliable and affordable energy will be key to the centre’s smooth running.
