Anambra State Approves ₦604m for Road, Stadium, Security, and Infrastructure Projects

On Mar. 2, the Anambra State Executive Council has approved new contracts worth about ₦604 million for road and infrastructure projects to improve public services and security across Anambra State.

The decision was taken during the council’s second meeting in 2026 held at the Government House, also known as the Light House, in Awka, the state capital.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, made this known in a statement after the meeting.

He said the council also approved plans for the inauguration activities of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim for their second term in office. The inauguration follows Soludo’s victory in the 2025 Anambra State governorship election held on November 8.

According to the statement, three main events will mark the inauguration.

An interdenominational church service will hold on March 15, the official swearing-in ceremony will take place on March 17, while a thanksgiving service has been scheduled for March 22.

The council also created different subcommittees that will handle the planning and smooth organisation of the events.

As part of the infrastructure approvals, the council released ₦164.4 million for additional costs in the construction of a standard athletics track and natural grass football pitch at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex.

Another ₦72.6 million was approved for road markings and installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10-kilometre Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road.

To support security operations in the state, the council also approved ₦121.9 million for the supply and installation of 10 converted 40-foot containers. These containers will be used as temporary accommodation for security personnel stationed at different locations across the state.

In addition, the council approved ₦172.2 million for the construction of asphalt surfaces on the internal dual carriage driveway at the International Conference Centre Awka.

Another ₦175.4 million was also approved for asphalt surfacing of the service lane that leads to the Anambra State House of Assembly and the Anambra State High Court complex in Awka.

During the meeting, the council also reviewed issues related to law and order in the state. It discussed the recent demolition of an illegal shrine linked to criminal activities, which authorities say is part of efforts to improve security and maintain social stability.

In another decision, the council announced that Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka will now be used only for official government programmes.

Private events that used to take place there will now be moved to the Multipurpose Arena of the Awka Township Stadium.

Government officials explained that these latest approvals follow earlier projects worth about ₦16.7 billion already awarded for roads, electricity, and other infrastructure in Anambra.

According to the state government, the projects are part of a wider plan to improve infrastructure, strengthen security coordination, and support economic development across the state.
