Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori flagged off the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road on Oct. 14, 2025, a major transport route linking the state’s industrial hub to Edo State.
The groundbreaking ceremony, started a 10-kilometre dual carriageway project from the Spare Parts Market U-turn in Effurun to just past Ohore Junction before the Omenta Bridge. The ₦35.7 billion project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), got ₦8.9 billion—25 percent—as mobilisation funds from the federal government.
The work was requested by the Federal Ministry of Works and fits with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s push for infrastructure.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori said the project was taken up to help residents who use the road for business and daily travel. “As a government that puts the people first, we took up this federal road project because its users are our people,” he stated. “The rehabilitation of this critical route will improve mobility, boost productivity, and enhance safety for thousands of commuters.”
The governor pointed out that the road’s poor condition had led to heavy traffic jams and economic losses, especially for transporters and traders carrying goods between Warri, Sapele, Benin, and nearby areas. He promised strict oversight of the contractor to ensure quality and timely delivery.
The Warri–Sapele–Benin Road is one of the busiest in the South-South, acting as a main link between the Niger Delta and southern Nigeria. Its reconstruction should cut travel time, improve logistics, and grow regional trade.
Delta State’s role in fixing this federal road follows similar state-federal partnerships nationwide, as subnational governments join efforts to upgrade major highways under the Renewed Hope programme.
