On Sept. 18, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, launched the full-scale construction of the Arterial Road N1 (Olusegun Obasanjo Way), stretching from Wuye District to Ring Road II (Olusegun Obasanjo Way) in Abuja.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Wike said the project shows the FCT Administration’s commitment to improving road networks and easing traffic problems to support Abuja’s long-term urban growth, as outlined in the Abuja Master Plan. He added that the new road will boost economic activities and improve residents’ living conditions. Wike expressed confidence in the contractor, who is also handling the Federal Highway 105 project from Airport Expressway to Kuje, to deliver the work on time.
Addressing rumours about his health after a recent overseas trip, Wike dismissed claims that he was sick or had a heart attack, calling them politically motivated. “It’s unfortunate to hear that they said I was sick, they said you had a heart attack. God will continue to help them have a heart attack,” he said, explaining that he only took a well-deserved break to stay healthy for work.
Wike also condemned the harsh criticism of President Tinubu on social media, particularly an instance where a popular activist called the President a criminal. He said such statements are uncalled for, noting that Nigerians are lucky to have a president who respects the rule of law. He compared this to the United States, where people criticise leaders but would not publicly call a president a criminal. “This is a country where somebody will go on social media to say Mr President is a criminal, and nothing will happen,” he said.
On concerns raised by FCT resident doctors planning a protest over claims that the FCTA is focusing on roads instead of healthcare, Wike assured them that their issues, including allowances and hiring health officers, are being addressed. He mentioned that the 2025 capital budget for health is about N25 billion, approved by the National Assembly in July. Wike also warned against using the civil service for political purposes, saying, “If you want to enter political party A, you are free to enter and face me when the time comes, but don’t use the civil service to play politics.
”Regarding street lighting in the FCT, Wike said the administration has introduced new strategies, including four-year maintenance contracts with companies and new technologies to prevent vandalism. He warned officials against any corruption that could harm President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda in the FCT.
